Whether you are only interested in hacking, or are planning to compete in top, A-rated horse shows, you are going to need a few good pairs of britches. Britches and jodhpurs are designed to be used with tall boots, or with paddock boots for very young children. The features of britches make them ideal for this – they are fitted, slip into boots easily, made from tough fabrics and have patches on the inside of the knee to off more grip and comfort. While jeans and chaps are becoming more popular for schooling purposes, they won’t give you the same feel as jodhpurs, so even if you prefer chaps you will want to practice in tall boots and britches from time to time in order to prepare yourself for the show ring.

Schooling
When it comes to buying britches for schooling and practice, you have a wide range of options. You can choose from different colors, from rust to black, and pick a fabric that best suits your needs. For example, if you ride in cold weather, you will want to look for britches that are thicker and offer more warmth. Some britches even come with fleece lining. Be sure to look for a pair of britches that are tough and won’t rip, tear or stretch out.

For show britches you will want to invest in a few really nice, high quality pairs. Tailored Sportsmans in tan color with suede knee patches are the standard for A-rated shows. However, there are some companies that make britches with a similar look and feel for a lot less. If you are planning on competing in hunter or jumper classics where prize money is involved, you will also want to buy a nice pair of white Tailored Sportsmans.

When purchasing new britches, the most important thing to look for is a good fit. You don’t want a pair that is too tight as that will be uncomfortable and won’t look as nice. The same goes for britches that are too big and baggy.
