Care & Grooming Buying Guide

If you’re thinking about buying a horse or pony, you will have to consider all the extra things you will need for riding, caring and grooming. It’s not only nice to have a clean-looking horse with a shiny coat, but it is also important to their health and well-being. Here are a few essential items to add to your grooming box.

Currycomb
A good currycomb should be one of the first grooming tools you buy. Currycombs are used to get deep under the horse’s hair to get out dirt, dry skin and loose hair. There are a couple different types of currycombs you can get. The first is a traditional round currycomb that is very stiff and works really well to get dirt up. Another popular type is the curry mitt, which goes over your hand sort of like a mitten. Curry mitts are great if your horse is sensitive, and also for currying legs and faces.

Brushes
You definitely need to have a brush in your grooming kit, and most likely you’ll have more than one for different purposes. A stiff, hard brush is good for horses with big, fluffy coats and also for getting off stubborn mud and dirt. You should also have a soft brush to use on legs and faces, and also if your horse has ticklish skin.

Hoof Pick
A good, solid hoof pick is an essential tool to have on hand. It is incredibly important to thoroughly clean out your horses hooves a couple times a day. This is to prevent any bruising that might come from a stone, or thrush that might develop from wet feet.

Besides these three essential items, there are plenty of other grooming tools you will want to add to your tack box. Some additional supplies include: horse shampoo, fly spray, clippers, hoof polish, and a mane and tail brush. Although it might seem like a big, initial expense, by buying high quality brushes and looking after them, they should last you for years to come.
