Riding Apparel

Whether you are planning on competing in A-rated show jumping competitions, or just like to hack out on trails, you will need to buy the necessary riding apparel. Riding clothes and equipment is made specifically for the saddle so that you are not only safe during your ride, but also that you are as comfortable as possible. You wouldn’t run a marathon in sandals just like you wouldn’t jump a horse in shorts. Here are some tips to help you decide just what you need to have a safe, comfortable ride.

Riding Helmets:
A helmet should be the absolute first thing you purchase even before you step foot in the stirrup. The most important thing to look for when shopping for a helmet is that it is a certified safety helmet. Not only is it a good idea to have one, it is required if you plan on competing in any hunter jumper shows. Luckily there is a huge range of companies that offer stylish safety helmets. Some of the more popular brands for both at home and the show ring are GPA, IRH, and Charles Owen.

Stable Apparel:
For hacking and training at home, your apparel should be as comfortable as possible. You will want to have a good set of leather paddock boots, either half chaps or full chaps, and a good pair of tough gloves. Other than that, what you wear for everyday riding can come out of your closet. Polo shirts and nice sweaters are great for everyday training as well are a pair of good-fitting jeans to go under your chaps. You will want to make sure all your clothing and outerwear is not baggy so it doesn’t flap around (and also so your trainer can see your posture).

Show Apparel:
If you plan on competing in hunter/jumper shows you will need to get the right set of clothes so you can make the best impression on the judges. You will need show shirts, a show jacket, leather riding gloves, britches, and tall boots. As always, make sure everything is in your size. For a good pair of britches, look for brands like Tailored Sportsmen that are popular for horse shows. When shopping for show shirts it’s a good idea to get a couple of different colors. Make sure you have at least one nice white shirt, and the others should be muted colors (nothing too flashy).

While it may seem expensive buying all this new apparel for horseback riding, by shopping online you can often find great deals on both new and used horse apparel. Remember that safety should be your priority, and after that, just see what appeals to you!
