Show Coats
If you plan on competing in rated hunter/jumper shows, you will need to have all the necessary apparel for the show ring. At the top of your list should be a really great quality, beautiful hunt coat. A lot of riders have multiple show coats for different seasons or event types, but for now, you will need to focus on finding a great, all-around show jacket for the ring based on the material, color and fit.
Material
Most nice hunter jumper coats are made from wool, with varying degrees of thickness. Although wool is a very warm material, you can find many hunt coats that are made with very lightweight wool that make them ideal for summer horse shows. If you plan on competing in the same jacket year-round, you will want to find a jacket that is warm enough for the winter months but won't have you boiling come summer. It is also important to look for lining that is durable but also has some stretch crafted into it.
Fit
Hunt coats should be fitted well to your form. The sleeves need to come a past your wrist when standing, the jacket should fall past your hips, and most importantly, the jacket should have a cut that is form-fitting and not loose. Most hunt coats come with three buttons which is the classic show look. Make sure you accurately take down your measurements before shopping for a coat -- a jacket that is too big or too small can end up being the difference between first and second place in equitation classes.
Color
What color you want for your jacket is entirely a matter of personal preference. For winter coats, you might want to try a dark navy or gray coat with light pinstripes. You can find black as well, though they are not very modern looking. Light gray looks very pretty for summer coats, especially when paired with a light pink show shirt. You can also find show coats in shades of brown, green and tan.
Take your time when shopping for a new show coat. You want to make sure you find a jacket that has the right material, color and fit for your body. If you plan on competing in hunter classics where there is prize money involved, you should also look into purchasing a shadbelly.
