Spurs
Spurs are used in horseback riding as an additional aid to help control your horse, not to hurt them. They can be an incredibly valuable tool in addition to your hands, legs, crop and voice commands. When shopping for spurs it’s important to take several factors into consideration.
Use and Style
What do you intend to use the spurs for? If you have a very lazy, mellow horse that doesn’t respond well to your leg, you will likely want to get a longer pair of spurs so your horse will really feel it when you put your heel into him. A popular style for shows and everyday use are the Prince of Wales spurs. For expert riders who have a horse that spooks at the jumps, a rowelled spur with a disc might be more appropriate as the sensation really gets the horse’s attention
Size
Once you have decided on the intended use and style of the spur, you will need to get the right size for both you and your horse. The spur should be long enough that you can easily apply pressure to your horse’s sides when needed, but not so long that the spur is constantly jabbing them. The spur should also fit snugly on your boots.
Straps
When it comes to straps, you can choose between leather and synthetic. While synthetic is less expensive, it does not look as professional for the horse show arena. You may even decide to get two pairs of straps so you can keep your nice leather ones in good shape.
Most riders these days have more than one set of spurs for different uses. You may want to train at home in blunt, everyday spurs while at the horse show you may need to upgrade to something a little stronger. Be sure to talk it over with your trainer to find a great pair of spurs for you and your horse’s needs.
